Islanders looking to improve on Game 1 performance
Your Charlottetown Islanders have drawn first blood in Round 2 of the QMJHL Playoffs.
On Friday night the Islanders pulled into the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax for a matchup with Maritime division foe, the Halifax Mooseheads.
After allowing a power play goal to open the scoring, the Islanders scored one of their own with Keith Getson getting his stick on a rebound, beating Alexi Gravel with his 6th goal of the post-season.
Neither team would score again until the third period when Nikita Alexandrov picked up a loose puck in front of the Mooseheads net, beating a sprawled out Gravel to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.
The Mooseheads answered back with two goals of their own early in the third period, focing a late rally from Charlottetown.
With just over eight minutes remaining Getson scored his second goal of the game, deflecting a Daniel Hardie shot past the Halifax netminder to tie the game at three goals apiece.
The game would roll into overtime where Pascal Aquin would win the game for the Islanders with a deflection on an Olivier Desjardin point shot, drawing first blood in round two.
Matthew Welsh will be in goal again on Saturday, and confidence will be riding high as the Halifax native enters a familiar arena coming off of a 41 save performance in a big Game 1 win.
With Filip Zadina picking up a goal and Arnaud Durandeau grabbing two assists in Game 1 they are now tied for the team lead in playoff scoring with 10 points.
As for the Islanders, with his assist against the Mooseheads Daniel Hardie now leads the Islanders in post-season scoring, contributing a goal and nine assist for a team leading 10 points.
