Islanders outlast Mooseheads in Game 2
With a win on Saturday night the Islanders have jumped out to a 2-0 series lead in Round two against the Halifax Mooseheads.
The Islanders opened the scoring at the 7:08 mark of the opening period, with Nikita Alexandrov making a spectacular move at the blueline before firing a shot on net, resulting in an easy tap in goal for Derek Gentile to open the scoring.
Charlottetown added to their lead minutes later with Alexandrov coming up big again, snapping a pass from Cameron Askew past the blocker of Alexis Gravel to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.
The Mooseheads would answer back mid-way through the second period on the power play with Filip Zadina firing a wrist-shot from the slot beating Welsh over the blocker to cut into the Islanders’ lead.
Charlottetown was quick to steal the momentum though, as less than two minutes later Keith Getson picked up the puck short-handed and broke down the right wing into the Halifax zone. Getson would go on to drop his shoulder into Jared McIsaac and float a weak backhand shot on net, which would make its way across the goal line after McIsaac crashed into his own net taking Gravel and the puck with him.
The Islanders were not done there, as they would add Pascal Aquin’s 8th goal of the playoffs and Alexandrov’s second goal of the game over a two-minute span to give the Islanders a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.
Charlottetown stuck again early in the third with Hunter Drew squeezing a shot underneath the newly entered Blade Mann-Dixon on the power play to give the Islanders a five goal lead.
Halifax would respond in a big way through, striking for three goals in the final 10 minutes of the period, with Raphael Lavoie, Brett Crossley and Benoit-Olivier Groulx each coming away with a goal.
That is as close as the Mooseheads would come though as with just over a minute remaining Hunter Drew flipped a backhand shot from the Islanders zone all the way down ice into an empty net to seal the Islanders victory.
