Islanders take 2-0 series lead after another strong third period

The Charlottetown Islanders were down 3-2 in the third period of game two against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

That was until Nicolas Meloche wired one home from the point at 11:28.

Kameron Kielly built off the momentum less than a minute later when he made it 4-3.

Adam Marsh sealed the deal with 1:03 left in the third period as he buried one into the empty Screaming Eagles net.

On Thursday, the Islanders also scored three in the third period to win 4-1. After the win on Saturday, they now hold a 2-0 lead in their second-round series against the Screaming Eagles.

Daniel Sprong scored the Islanders other two goals.

His first came at 3:31 of the first period on the power play to open the scoring.

His second was at 14:48 of the second period, also on the power play.

Sprong now holds the record for most playoff goals in franchise history. He passed former P.E.I. Rocket player Cory Urquhart tonight.

The Islanders had to show some adversity throughout Saturday’s game after forward Francois Beauchemin was ejected from the game for kneeing. They were also without Dillon Boucher, who was serving a 1-game suspension from a hit in game one.

Gregor MacLeod was one Islanders forward who saw more ice time in the win. Keeping it simple and playing well defensively were keys to his game on Saturday.

Following the game, he talked about how the team played.

“I thought we played pretty good. We didn’t get a ton of shots on net tonight but we played good defensively and got the win.”

Cape Breton led the shots 40-28 after the 60 minutes. MacLeod talked about what makes them a difficult team to play against.

“Their top two lines are really fast, they work hard on the back check and they have a great power play. Continuing to work hard like we’ve been doing and playing a strong defensive game is key for us right now.”

The Islanders now travel to Cape Breton for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday.

All the action will be listenable live on, as George Matthews and Darcy Cudmore travel with the team.
