With Christmas just around the corner, the Charlottetown Islanders look to deliver their fans a pair of wins to their fans before heading home for the Christmas break, beginning tonight when they take on the Saint John Sea Dogs at Harbour Station.
The Islanders (20-8-2-1) are coming off of a thrilling 5-4 shootout victory over the Moncton Wildcats on Wednesday morning. The win extends an extremely impressive run since the start of November, where they’ve lost just three times in regulation over 15 games.
Brett Budgell had two goals in the victory, while Matthew Welsh made 49 saves in victory. With a goal and an assist on Wednesday, Daniel Hardie now sits atop the Islanders points standings with 37 points in 31 games. His 20 goals is also good for sixth overall in the QMJHL. His linemate Keith Getson added his third multi-point game in four December games.
The Sea Dogs, meanwhile, have been trending in the opposite direction. Following their loss on Wednesday to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Saint John (4-25-2-1) have now lost three straight games and eight of their last ten.
One bright spot for the Sea Dogs has been the stellar play of rookie defenseman and PEI native Charlie DesRoches. The 16 year-old currently sits tied for sixth among all defenders with seven goals. To put hoq impressive this is in perspective, the rookie is tied with the likes of Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Hunter Drew, and Halifax Mooseheads defender Jared McIsaac.
In goal, Alex D’Orio will get the nod for Saint John. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect might not have the most sterling win totals (3) and save percentage (.879), however he’s faced more shots than any other goalie in the QMJHL (804).
Don’t forget that tonight’s game will be featured as always on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio. George Matthews and Cory Arsenault will have the call for you both tonight and tomorrow night in Halifax.
