Islanders win final meeting against Sea Dogs in front of sold out crowd

The Saint John Sea Dogs lineup was missing a few key names on Friday night in Charlottetown when the Islanders defeated them 6-3.

The Sea Dogs, who have already clinched the Maritime Division and league title, had Thomas Chabot, Mathieu Joseph, Simon Bourque, Matthew Highmore, Spencer Smallman, Julien Gauthier, Kyle Ward and Callum Booth watching from the stands.

For the Islanders, Adam Marsh, Gregor MacLeod, Dillon Boucher and Will Bower were missing from the lineup.

The Islanders scored early and often. After one period, it was 4-0.

Nicolas Meloche (Kameron Kielly, Carl Neill on PP), Pascal Aquin (Keith Getson, Daniel Sprong), Filip Chlapik (Matthew Grouchy, Chris Chaddock) and Daniel Sprong (Filip Chlapik, Kameron Kielly) scored in the first period.

The Sea Dogs scored the only two goals of the second frame. Isiah Campbell and Bokondji Imama had the goals.

In the third, Chris Chaddock scored at 1:33 (Filip Chlapik, Kameron Kielly) to make it 5-2 Islanders.

Imama’s second of the game for Saint John cut the lead to 5-3 at 8:48.

Alex Dostie’s empty netter with 1:02 left in the game (Daniel Sprong, Carl Neill) sealed the deal. The Islanders picked up the two points and win #46 on the season in the 6-3 win over the Sea Dogs.

Dostie’s goal was his 30th of the season. This is the first time he has scored 30 goals in his four seasons in the league.

“It is nice to have 30 goals for sure. Now, when we go into the playoffs it won’t mean anything and it’s all about winning,” said Dostie.

Although the Sea Dogs didn’t ice their full lineup, and the Islanders are unable to catch Saint John, Dostie said it was important for the team to continue to play their game.

“Well we want to be prepared for the playoffs and no matter if it’s the full Sea Dogs lineup or not, we need to keep in mind that playoffs are approaching and we need to play our game.”

The Eastlink Centre was packed full on Friday night with 3,673 fans.

The Islanders finish the regular season on Saturday at 3pm against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
