Training camp opens up for 2017/18 season
You know what they say about Summer being over after Old Home Week?
Well, that was definitely the case for the staff and players participating at the Charlottetown Islanders training camp.
After the big race on Saturday night, main camp started on Monday in Cornwall at the APM Centre.
The day started with fitness testing and regular ‘first day of camp’ things like headshots and equipment fitting.
It was a mix of returning Islanders like Keith Getson, Matthew Welsh, Pierre-Olivier Joseph with new hopefuls like Nikita Alexandrov, Dakota Lund-Cornish and more.
The latter of these groups have been in training camp mode for almost a week now.
The rookies participated in a short camp last week before heading to Moncton for the second annual QMJHL Rookie Showcase on the weekend.
The Islanders squad went 1-2 in the tournament.
On Friday, they lost 4-0 to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
On Saturday, the young Islanders won 6-5 in a shootout against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
Alexis Gaudreau, Nikita Alexandrov, Evan Gallant, Cameron Bisson and Emil Lessard-Aydin scored for the Islanders.
Zach Thususka had two assists.
Lund-Cornish stopped 18 of 20 shots and Hugo Duteau stopped 14 of 17 in the Isles net.
Alexandrov scored the lone shootout goal.
On Sunday, to see who would place third, the Titan beat the Islanders 8-2.
Drew Johnston and Evan Gallant scored for the Islanders.
Duteau shared the net with Nolan Boyd in the loss.
When the main camp started on Monday, two invites from Ontario were also on the ice: D Jaimen Allison and D Taylor Egan.
The camp is taking place in Cornwall at the APM Centre for the first time ever after moving from Pownal, where it was for the past few seasons.
On Tuesday, the team will be scrimmaging from 11:30am to 1:30pm, as well as 7:00 to 9:00pm.
On Wednesday, the Islanders participate in their first preseason game against the Moncton Wildcats at 7:00pm.
Come and check out the next potential crop of Islanders players.
