Community Involvement | Matthew Welsh

QMJHL

Matthew Welsh has done a lot not just for the community of Charlottetown, but Prince Edward Island as a whole. Because of his selflessness, charitable efforts, dedication of his personal time, and the special connections he’s made with a number of families, Welsh has become one of the most popular Charlottetown Islanders ever.

Since his debut in the QMJHL at the age of 16, Welsh has utilized his position as a community role model to bring positivity and joy to the faces of Islanders fans. One of the first players to volunteer for community events, the 20-year-old goaltender has set a standard for what it means to be a Charlottetown Islander off the ice.

One of the programs that Welsh is passionate about is the Children’s Wish Foundation. Year after year, he’s endlessly involved in the foundation’s initiatives and is always up for meeting a new child that needs a positive impact in his life. Whether he’s tired or not after playing a game, Welsh is always out there signing every autograph, taking the time to make the kids feel special and snapping pictures with them. Welsh has continued to support the sick children in every way possible; sending them video greetings and words of encouragement as they battle their illnesses.

Welsh’s work with children also extends into the classroom. Throughout the 2018-2019 season, the goaltender worked with three students between the ages of 9 and 11 at a local elementary school. He’d spend an hour with each student a week, taking on a Big Brother role as he’d plan activities, play board games, and mentor them.

Welsh also served as a Player Ambassador for Hockey Gives Blood and the Canadian Blood Services this season. On multiple occasions, his commitment as a Player Ambassador got others throughout the CHL interested in joining not only the cause at HGB, but other community initiatives.
