Islanders look to keep hot streak going against Titan

The top team in the QMJHL Eastern Conference will be taking the ice at the Eastlink Centre tonight.

The conference-leading Charlottetown Islanders take their eight-game point streak in to battle when they take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan for the second time within a week.

The Islanders (6-0-2-0) remain the hottest team in the Q after a dominant performance just last night against the defending Memorial Cup champions Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Five different players found the back of the net as the Isles defeated the Huskies 5-0. Matthew Welsh recorded his 12th career shutout, entering in to a tie for 10th in QMJHL history in that regard. He now sits 1st in the league with a 1.37 goals against average and a .947 save percentage.

Nikita Alexandrov recorded three assists in the victory, giving the St. Louis Blues prospect 100 points in his QMJHL career. He now sits second on the Isles with nine points in just six games, and has recorded at least a point in all but one game since returning from a minor shoulder injury.

In goal, Jacob Goobie gets his third start of the season and second at home. He’ll look to rebound from his last start, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Quebec Remparts in his first start at home.

Meanwhile in Bathurst, the Titan are coming off of a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Titan on Thursday night where they held the lead until midway through the third period. That loss extended a long losing streak at home for Bathurst, extending over a year to October 5th, 2018.

That’s not to suggest that hope is lost in Bathurst. The team has a strong group of young talent highlighted by three top picks from the past QMJHL Draft. Forwards Riley Kidney, Cole Huckins, and Tristan Roy have been impressing many around the league with their steady play and integration to the major junior game. Kidney leads the trio in points with six through eight games to start the season; that total is third amongst 16-year old forwards in the league, behind Moncton’s Zachary L’Heureux and Quebec’s James Malatesta.
