Jacob Squires | Making an instant impact

Jacob Squires has been making an instant impact in the community ever since being traded to his hometown team on July 2nd.

Squires, along with the Charlottetown Islanders, announced the launch of a new initiative that will highlight and showcase Special Olympic athletes on Prince Edward Island.

The Ladner’s Source For Sports Fan Of The Game will highlight a Prince Edward Island Special Olympic athlete at each Islanders home game this season, as well as raise money by selling raffle tickets for a chance to win exclusive prizes and experiences.028A3DA4-B219-41FA-B5DC-90B7D1B0B064

Squires’s connection with the Special Olympics and its athletes has a long history since his early days of playing minor hockey in Charlottetown. He commented, “growing up, Edison Murray was around our team for many years. Edison, who has Down syndrome, was one of our biggest fans every game, and he was always cheering us on in the stands. He would come to the games in his red Charlottetown Abbies uniform and cheer for us like it was game 7 of the playoffs. Edison is a great person and a great friend. He is my driving factor behind starting this organization and I hope that I have the chance to impact people the way Edison impacted me.”

The Islanders have a longstanding relationship with Special Olympics PEI and we’re thrilled to be able to honour and showcase some of their amazing athletes throughout the upcoming season” commented Islanders Vice President of Sales and Marketing Jason MacLean.

Squires was traded to the Islanders from Cape Breton where he played two seasons with the Eagles. He will have the chance to play his 19-year-old season in front of his family and friends.

“The best part of this for me is that I get to play for my hometown team and work with the community that I was raised in. That’s very special to me.”

Jacob and the Islanders host the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday, September 24th at Eastlink Centre to kick off the team’s 10th anniversary season.

2022-23 Season Tickets, 15-Game Packs, and Flex-40 ticket packages are now on sale at the Islanders Team Shop online, in-person, or by phone at 902.892.7351.
