The battle for the final playoff spot has heated up with just 23 games remaining in the regular season for the Charlottetown Islanders. After an up-and-down Quebec road trip, the Isles will face a daunting task with back-to-back home games against the hottest team in the QMJHL, the Halifax Mooseheads.
The Islanders (16-24-4-1) carried momentum heading into a three-in-three Quebec road trip with stops in Blainville, Victoriaville, and Quebec. While the Isles lost all three games, they salvaged two points by taking two of the QMJHL’s strongest teams, the Victoriaville Tigres and the Quebec Remparts, into overtime. The inspired play in those games don’t accurately reflect the scoreboard and the team is confident heading into this series of games.
Meanwhile, the Mooseheads (33-7-4-1) are currently on a historic run. Halifax went a perfect 10-0 in the month of January, have won 11 straight games overall, and haven’t lost in regulation in 21 games. Powered by a strong offense and backed by sterling goaltending, the Moose have looked unstoppable dating back to November 2022.
ROSTER UPDATES
Charlottetown
Jeremie Biakabutuka will serve the final game of a three-game suspension. Alexis Michaud remains day-to-day with an upper body injury. Jakob Robillard gets the start tonight in goal.
Halifax
Defenseman Cam Whynot was sidelined with an upper body as of January 29th; his status remains unknown for tonight’s game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Charlottetown
- Jakob Robillard has been unflappable since becoming a Charlottetown Islander. He’s coming off an eye-opening 48 save performance against the top team in the QMJHL, Quebec Remparts. Robillard has a stellar .927 save percentage in six games as an Islander.
- Peter Repcik is producing offensively since returning from the World Junior Championship. The Slovakian forward has points in five of his last seven games.
Halifax
- It’s hard to talk about Halifax without talking about Jordan Dumais. The Columbus Blue Jackets prospect has a nine-point lead in the QMJHL points race with 86 points in just 41 games, including nine assists in his past three games.
- Josh Lawrence appears to be the catalyst of the strong Halifax play of late. The former Armada forward has 41 points in 21 games as a Moosehead – a tenure that stretches the duration of the team’s current 21-game point streak.
SERIES AT A GLANCE
Charlottetown and Halifax have met five times previously this season, with the Mooseheads winning four of the five matchups.
