Two games this weekend in Cape Breton could ultimately decide where the Charlottetown Islanders finish the regular season. The first of those two games is tonight at Centre 200.

The Islanders (24-29-5-1) didn’t end their Quebec road trip on a positive note with two losses to the Sherbrooke Phoenix and Shawinigan Cataractes. Still, the Islanders remain two points up on the Eagles for seventh in the Eastern Conference standings while holding a game in hand. Sitting three points behind the Baie-Comeau Drakkar for sixth, nothing is decided for the QMJHL Playoffs; it’s entirely possible that the Islanders could face any one of five different teams in the first round.

Meanwhile, the Eagles (24-32-3-1) have lost three straight games, including back-to-back games against the Saint John Sea Dogs. Cape Breton has straddled the line over the past month, going an even .500 in their last ten games.

Lane Hinkley will return to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension, while Sam Bowness will serve the second of a two-game suspension issued following their game against Sherbrooke. Bowness will be joined by Simon Hughes (aggressor, accumulation of code) and head coach Jim Hulton (unsportsmanlike conduct), who are each serving suspensions. Jarrett Todd remains out due to injury.

The Eagles iced a fully healthy lineup in their last game on Tuesday.

  • Peter Repcik has been racking up assists en masse, with six straight games with a helper and nine assists overall in that span.
  • Marcus Kearsey has quietly begun chasing Islanders franchise history. With 25 points on the season, Kearsey is now fifth among rookie defenseman in that category.

  • Captain Ivan Ivan is enjoying a career season with 78 points so far. He’s been on fire lately with a six-game point streak and 15 points in that stretch.
  • Since being acquired from the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, forward Jacob Newcombe has been in an offensive groove with 21 points in 28 games as an Eagle.

In six matchups this season, the Islanders and Eagles have split games three apiece.
